I’m super jazzed with you to share my experience on doing the 21 Day Fix Extreme & also some of my favorite 21 Day Fix Extreme Meal Ideas. This last month has been one of my BEST months when it comes to health & fitness. While I’ve continually made efforts to eat healthy and exercise, I still carried a few vices with me–namely in the form of Diet Coke and Drive Thru meals. I felt like no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t shake it. But that changed…

I started to do a 21 Day Fix Extreme & a inspired by Whole30  and WOW has it produced some amazing results. For those of you not familiar with Whole30, it’s a free nutrition program where you eliminate several foods from your diet (grains, sugars, legumes, alcohol, chocolate, soda, dairy, …you know, anything delicious). The concept behind it is (1) to help break some habits and (2) to determine any food sensitivities you may have. I purged my pantry of everything that isn’t Whole30-friendly. Doesn’t it look terrifying?

I want to be SUPER clear so I don’t avoid confusion. I did not do a Whole30 Plan. My plan was simply inspired by it. I eliminated all of the foods they suggested, with the exception of Shakeology & the Beachbody Performance Line.

Whole30 Review

21 Day Fix Extreme is a fitness program and nutrition plan. The plan consists of color-coded containers that represent different food types. I am told how many containers of different food types I could have based on my specific body type & goals. I followed the container numbers based on my body type–but I still omitted foods that weren’t Whole30-friendly. I did make 2 minor exceptions to this: I drank Shakeology daily and used the Beachbody Performance Line. Given that those products make me feel better, I made the decision to keep those in my diet.

Honestly, it was scary at first. But what I found is it wasn’t too bad! Sure, there are moments when I was a big whiner, but it was mostly because I wanted the convenience of grabbing something on the go. I wasn’t necessarily craving a certain food. I’m now on day 21 and I can honestly say that I’ve broken habits and my stomach has been feeling much better!! Also, it’s been a struggle for me to follow the 21 Day Fix containers in the past–but honestly, it’s super easy now. Here are my 21-day photos (please note, I started 21 Day Fix Extreme 1 week in, so this is only Day 14 of 21 Day Fix Extreme):

Whole30 Review

What seemed to work well for me was the tough-love approach of Whole30 (but again, I repeat, my system was simply inspired by them–i did not do “Whole30”). If you eat so much as a drop of unapproved foods, you start over. One of their mottos is : “This isn’t hard, cancer is hard.” I used that same attitude for myself. It also helped for me to see their calendar to help validate when I felt sluggish and cruddy, and gave me hope for the “Tiger Blood” week. The calendar is surprisingly accurate:

The biggest tip I have is to keep it simple. I scoured cookbooks and found all kinds of fancy recipes, but really, simple is absolutely best for us. Also, I know a lot of people are afraid of eating healthy and depriving their family. Or, on the flip side, they are afraid of feeling like short-order cooks!!! These meals were so easy to pair up with my family, and I’ll share a family-friendly way you could do that (of course it’s always nice if the whole family could be on board–I’m going to share my tips based on the assumption that you couldn’t make that magic happen…I know I couldn’t!). Here are some of my favorite simple go-to meals:

1| Turkey sausage over mixed greens with tomatoes and avocado (apple on the side)

Just saute up on onions & garlic, sprinkle in some seasoning like fennel, sage, salt, and pepper, then mix it with ground turkey to form patties and cook.

Adapt for family:

BRINNER–whole wheat pancakes with maple syrup, sausage, eggs…..YUM!

2 | Smoked Pulled Pork cooked in 1tsp olive oil and served over mixed greens with bell peppers (and a side of mango)

The Smoked Pork at Costco is 100% Whole30-friendly and tastes amazingWhole30 Review

Adapt for family:

Pulled pork sandwiches: mix in some BBQ sauce & serve on whole wheat buns.

3 | Pork Carnitas over Romaine

Remember my Pork Carnitas recipe? Well—this is PERFECT to have on this plan. Now ignore those corn tortillas here ::waives hand:: these aren’t the droids your looking for :: On this 21 Day Fix Extreme/Whole30 Hybrid, we just serve our carnitas either in a raw sweet bell pepper (SO GOOD!) or over romaine with some pico de gallo.

Adapt for family:

Serve these in tortillas, as shown above!

4 | Taco Meat over Mixed Greens

For the taco seasoning, I made my own (adapted form the Pioneer Woman recipe):

  • 2 teaspoons Chili Powder
  • 1-1/2 teaspoon Ground Cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Dried Oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 can diced tomatoes

Adapt for family:

Serve in Taco shells—my kids LOVE when it’s taco night!

5 | Sliced Sweet Bell Peppers and Turkey Sausage Cooked in Olive Oil

Seriously, turkey sausage is my BEST FRIEND right now. It’s simple to cook and has so much flavor.

Adapt for family:

Sausage & Peppers – my family just digs the sausage and peppers, so I serve it with a side that they love (garlic bread or na’an is a good favorite in our house–Costco has an awesome Na’an)

6 | Sweet Potato Sausage and Leftover Vegetables

Are you noticing a theme? Take note–because it’s important. I have only a few different types of food, but I mix them up in different ways. That made it convenient, felt like it mixed things up, and helped with my grocery bill too!!!!

Adapt for family:

Use this as a leftovers night—or baked potato bar!

7 | Baked Potato Topped with Homemade Sloppy Joe Mix

You are going to hate me, but I don’t have a recipe. My husband looked up various Whole30 sloppy joe recipes and came up with this one. I will say, one of my FAVORITE sloppy joe recipes is the my 21 Day Fix Sloppy Joe Sauce recipe (although it’s not Whole30-Compliant, so if you are doing a hybrid like mine, that wouldn’t work!)

Adapt for family:

Put sloppy joe mix on whole wheat buns and serve with a family-favorite side
